I love cutting through jargon and complexity to bring science to life for anyone, whatever their level of expertise. I can create:

• Punchy, engaging news pieces with attention-grabbing headlines

• People-centred features that tell the human stories behind science

• Press releases that pull the ‘so what?’ out of impenetrable journal articles

• Impact case studies that pinpoint the public and economic value of research and meet the needs of the upcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF)

• Reports that elegantly summarise research achievements or conference proceedings

• Social media posts that bring research findings to life.

I’m skilled at editing text into shape. I cut through the waffle to make writing clear, engaging, concise, free of jargon and accessible to the target audience.

I’ve an obsessive eye for detail to weed out all of the typos, grammar and spelling errors, and factual inaccuracies in a piece of text. Give me some content to polish and I’ll bring it up to a professional standard that’s fit for publication.

Editing and proof-reading

Research impact comes as second nature to me after many years of working for the Medical Research Council and within the university sector.

I work with communications teams and researchers from any discipline to help them pull together and hone impact case studies for the REF, to demonstrate value for money in publicly funded research, or for research funding bids.

During REF 2021, I worked with the University of Reading and University College London (top in the UK for research impact in REF 2021) to help make their impact case studies the best that they could be. I can’t wait to get stuck into helping universities to write or improve their case studies for REF 2029.

Research Impact

"Sarah’s editorial expertise was invaluable in the final stages of the REF 2021. Her calm professionalism and sharp eye for detail made a real difference to the quality and consistency of our case studies.”

-Tracey Duncombe, University of Reading
